The Schwinn 270 recumbent exercise bike is a great addition to any home gym as it has all the bells and whistles.

For a recumbent exercise bike or any home training gym equipment, it is a great idea to purchase a heavy-duty mat to both protect your floors and so that your equipment can’t slip and slide and is more secure, no matter how hard you work out.

SuperMats Heavy Duty Equipment Mat 11GS-GRAY Made in U.S.A. for Large Treadmills Ellipticals Rowers Rowing Machines Recumbent Bikes and Exercise Equipment Color Gray (3-Feet x 6.5-Feet) (36″ x 78″) (91.44 cm x 198.12 cm)

This one can be purchased online by simply clicking on the link above or on the picture. The mat is tough and durable and will protect your floors and carpets from the damage that heavy-duty exercise equipment can inflict.

The mat will also prolong the life of your exercise equipment by preventing floor and carpet dust from entering the belts and all the mechanical parts.

Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike

The Schwinn 230 is also a great buy, but not quite as advanced as the 270. It has goal tracking which enables each user to set individual exercise goals. You only have 2 profiles on this bike, which is fine if there are only two of you who use the machine.

There are 20 levels of resistance preset workout programs.

The high speed, high inertia drive system allows for both an easy start-up and smooth and quiet workouts.

The A20 lives up to the Schwinn quality standards and is less bulky than the bikes above. The goal track capability enables up to two users to set individual exercise goals.

There is an MP3 input so that you can listen to your favorite tunes as you workout.

It has 7 preset workout programs and a quick start function.

What Are The Main Differences Between These Schwinn Recumbent Exercise Bikes?

The main differences that strike me are:

  • the 270 has 25 levels of resistance, while the 230 has 20 and the A20 only has 8.
  • the 270 can have up to 4 saved profiles versus the 230 and the A20 which can only do 2. This is fine if it is just two of you using the bike.
  • the seat on the 270 is padded while the seat on the 230 is plastic with holes for airflow.
  • the 270 has 29 programs, the 230 has 22 and the A20 has 7.
  • there are 2 LCD displays on the 270 and the 230 and only one on the A20. 2 LCD’s are useful for playing a device on one and tracking your workout on the other.

Pros And Cons

Pros:

  • All the bikes have a very smooth ride on all their resistances and are very close to the heavy-duty commercial grade exercise bikes that you find at your local gym.
  • Sturdy and strong.
  • Slider seats are easy to adjust.
  • Recumbent bikes place low impact on your joints like knees and hips as well as great support for your back.
  • The easy assembly which will take about an hour.
  • Programs make exercising alone more fun and when it is more enjoyable, you are more likely to stick to the program.
  • Lightweight – not heavy. The 270 weighs 88 pounds.

Cons:

  • The 230 and the A20 could have made space for more than 2 profiles.
  • More care could have been taken with the seats on the 230 and the A20.
  • There is a weight limit of 300 pounds.
  • Pedals not comfortable on bare feet.

  1. Hello there! this is an amazing review you have got here. For me, the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike frame is designed well. A “walk through” style and low seating make getting on/off the bike easy, even for people with limited motion like me. Thank you very much for sharing this with me, I love it!

    • A recumbent bike is always the best option for older people and people with various injuries, as it is easier to use than an upright and more supportive for your back. I never thought to mention the lower seat also being a bonus in order to get on and off.

Thanks for stopping by to comment Joy.

  2. Thank you for this review on recumbent bikes. I have always been a walking and aerobics person. Recently I was thinking of taking my exercise to another level. I thought of a home gym and what I would like to equip it with. Reading this review has given me some ideas of what to do.

    • If you are thinking of getting a bike I strongly recommend the recumbent rather than the upright, as you won’t be able to use an upright if you have a back injury, so in the long run you get more use out of a recumbent – well into old age.

  3. Making exercise fun is what helps a person get into their workout. I’m completely sold on the Schwinn 270. The explore the world app looks amazing. The idea of traveling while stationary is way better than staring off into a screen full of stats, buttons, time and heart rate.

This is really good information. I like the A20 to cause it’s less bulky. Wish the A20 had the features of the 270 and it would be my perfect Schwinn recumbent bike. I’m saving this site cause I’m definitely coming back.

    • I would also like a less bulky bike, but with all the features that the Schwinn 270 has, I think I will have to make a concession here.
